What Is Inside One
Open a .vcf in a text editor and you will see it is readable: a line that begins the card, then a labelled line for each field such as name, telephone and email, then a line that ends it. Because it is plain text, it is small, easy to generate and easy to inspect. A single file can hold many contacts one after another, which is how an address book is exported in bulk.
Opening and Importing It
On an iPhone, opening the file from a message or the Files app shows the contact with an option to add it. On Android, opening it through the Contacts app or from a download prompts an import. On a computer, a double-click usually opens it in the default contacts or mail application, and Google Contacts and Outlook both have an import option for the file. The same file works on all of them, which is the whole appeal.
Why It Sometimes Goes Wrong
The common failures are small. A file served with the wrong type opens as text in the browser instead of offering to save. An old file using a legacy character encoding turns accents into odd symbols. A photo embedded at a very large size can make an import fail. And some apps import only the first contact from a file holding many. None of these are the fault of the person scanning, and a card builder that produces clean, correctly typed files avoids nearly all of them.
Making One From a Card
When someone opens a VCardForever card and saves the contact, the page produces a .vcf from the details on the card at that moment. Because it is made on request, it always reflects the current version of the card, not the one that existed when the code was printed.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open a .vcf file on my iPhone?
Tap the file in Messages, Mail or the Files app. The contact appears with an option to create a new contact or add to an existing one.
Why does my .vcf file open as text?
Usually the file was delivered with the wrong content type, so the browser displays it instead of handing it to the contacts app. Saving the file and opening it from the Files app normally works.
Can I import a .vcf into Google Contacts or Outlook?
Yes. Both have an import option for .vcf files, and both accept a file holding several contacts.
